Jacqueline Cisneros, Founder & CEO of ATOYAK

"Starting a global business with a social focus like ATOYAK has been a wonderful journey that has reached many milestones to help provide job opportunities to empower women.  Just like any small business however, we too have had to overcome many obstacles that came about but never stopped the drive to help or continue on this journey. Thinking back on our past experiences and ones we are currently undergoing … one of the biggest pain points or challenges we have faced has been funding and learning about the different laws and requirements needed to do business in and/or with three countries. I am dedicated to fulfill our mission: To create sustainable job opportunities that empower women in small towns of Mexico to rise out of poverty and live with dignity." - Jacqueline Cisneros, Founder & CEO, ATOYAK

ATOYAK's products are environmentally friendly leveraging only GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton yarn, which is hand-spun and dyed naturally with real plants. They are free of toxins and chemicals that can harm the environment or humans. Furthermore, every product purchased translates into a tangible work opportunity for women in small towns of Mexico and Peru. Your order is a contribution that alleviates the poverty these women face due to scarce employment opportunities.

Communication Advice for Millennials by Media Coach, Allison Kluger

Allison Kluger and Geena Davis at the annual YWCA luncheon.

Millennials have come to young adulthood in a time when the digital world has enabled everything to be tailored specifically for "you." Unfortunately this leads to more rigidity and less risk-taking as some young adults are very specific in what they want and what they demand, and are not as open and embracing of opportunities and other scenarios. While it is always helpful to know what you want, being so inward-focused closes you off to an intuitive awareness of other's feelings and thoughts and most important, their actual impressions of you.  You may think you are being confident, smart and funny, while you might really be coming off as arrogant and pretentious.

Consider being more outward-focused in your communications. Take the temperature of the room you are in more carefully and determine if you are making as much of an effort to contribute to the social arena you are visiting. Are you open to others' opinions and are you acknowledging others' ideas with genuine interest? Are you willing to compromise your own needs to help someone else out at work or in life for no personal rewards other than to learn or be helpful? Are you willing to be an active listener just for the joy of soaking up another's knowledge, rather than try to interrupt and attempt to dazzle with what you think you know? Not only will these small attempts of interpersonal communication build bridges to stronger relationships, but also, they will build a foundation for a better personal reputation and widen your social and career horizons even more.

1) Do NOT wear your workout attire anywhere but the gym. You never know who you are going to run in to!

2) Have a cocktail attire and black tie affair wardrobe ready to go! Shop for these pieces before you ever think you are going to need them to avoid panic when you do get invited to an event.

All you need is one good cocktail dress and one good gown, a great shoe and bag and you are set! Now is the time to shop for these pieces as everything is 50% off or more.

3) Invest in great basics that are your go to pieces for anything from a business meeting to a job interview. Pieces that make you feel confident and powerful when you wear them.

Top 5 Reputation Management Advice by Media Coach & Stanford Lecturer, Allison Kluger

Media Coach Allison Kluger is a former New York City TV executive who teaches reputation management at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Allison reveals her Top 5 Reputation Management Advice:

1. Your online reputation needs to be spotless. Clean up old posts and take down pictures that misrepresent you and show you in compromising positions. There is something called first impression and negative impression bias. People will judge you negatively if they see something they don't like as a first impression you put out about yourself.

2. Never burn bridges. Whenever you work in a place within a team or even as a leader or a manager, you will come across someone you don't get along with. Always be professional and civil. If you don't like that person, odds are there are many other people who feel the same. That person will burn his/her own bridges. Never gossip or spend time you can be working discussing someone else's problems. Focus on your own work and success and your will be noticed and recognized for your own stellar reputation.

3. First impressions matter when forming personal reputation. You can only create a first impression once. So make it count. Shake a hand with a firm grasp. Make strong eye contact. Try and be helpful, crack a joke, find common ground, make a lasting impression, make an introduction. If you leave a lingering, positive first impression on a first meeting, it can lead you to a job interview, an investor meeting, a new friendship, or a referral. I have had more people than not remind me of the first time they met me and how I made them feel good in some way.

4. The most important characteristics of building a strong personal reputation are being authentic, empathetic, committed and trustworthy. Even if a mistake is made in your business, or even in a personal matter, the best way to deal with any situation is to be accountable, empathetic and committed to finding a solution. People, in general just want to feel understood, acknowledged and appreciated. If you can authentically provide these services, you will always have a golden reputation.

5. A reputation is fluid in your career. There will be times you might have to defend it, rebuild, pivot, sustain. The good news is that it is in your control. By knowing that "It's not what happens, it's how you choose to deal with it," you can successfully control the impression you put out in meetings, online, in presentations, as a CEO, or a team leader. Reputation Management involves a healthy dose of strategic communication skills as you want to be aware of other's feelings and needs and expectations and where your role in your work and leadership dynamic fits in. You need a healthy dose of emotional intelligence to anticipate how your actions and words can impact others. Good leaders cannot act in a vacuum. They must be aware of how they are viewed and want to be viewed. To maintain a great reputation, the goal is to have the reputation you think you have MATCH the reputation you actually have.

Viral Video Marketing Hack by Mike McRitchie

Thank you to Mike McRitchieSmall Business Strategist and “Profit Inspector” for this blog post!

Everyone wants to make their blog posts and videos go viral.  And there are many ways to short-cut the  process. Whether that is having unique and awesome content, getting influencers on board to promote it, or tying to something that is hot in the public consciousness.

This one though was an interesting twist.

Now before I go into I must confess…I do have a vested interest…

I’ll tell you what it is at the end.

So what is the twist that makes this video so interesting?

Think back to Apple.  How often do you see Apple advertise these days?

Everywhere?

Actually no.

What you’re seeing is Apple everywhere.  But it isn’t Apple advertising per se.

It is Apple product placement.  Whether it is in movies or TV shows or other commercials that are leveraging off of Apple’s awesome products.

And just like Apple, you can do the same.

This video is a perfect example.

In this case you start off with a celebrity-based talk show (Modern Living with Kathy Ireland) – always a great way to start.

Then you have someone being interviewed – marketing expert Kathrina Miranda from the MiMA Marketing Agency.

Then you have the product placement.  In the video it is the testimonial video shown on the screen during the interview –HIPLegal’s spokeswoman, Annie Rogaski.

The exciting thing about this is there are actually three people marketing in this video – Kathy Ireland, Kathrina Miranda (MiMA), and Annie Rogaski (HIPLegal).

Imagine the exposure you get from this approach.

  • For the interviewer they get a great interview and added credibility
  • For the interviewee they get exposure from a key influencer’s audience/fan base
  • For the product/service placement person they get publicity from both audiences (in this case Kathy’s and Kathrina’s audiences).
  • And with this video you can also post to your blog (as I did here)
  • You can also tweet it, share it, and like it on all the social media channels
  • You can add it to your About or Media page for added credibility booster
  • If you’re the subject (Kathrina) of the testimonial then you can use the video with future offers or in sales presentations – isn’t it better to have someone else talk about how awesome you are?

So those are the big takeaways I got.

Now what other marketing ideas were interesting in this video?

  1. Video marketing is currently an awesome way to market.  People love videos (think YouTube as the 2nd most popular search engine behind Google).
  2. H2H – human to human marketing instead of B2B or B2C marketing.  The human touch is something many people overlook in their quest to become more credible they tend to corpify their marketing (basically make it sound boring, overly technical, and not focused on true benefits for the person buying the product or service).  H2H is a great habit of thinking to get into with your marketing.  Kudos to MiMA
  3. In the testimonial they talked about MiMA being essentially their “external marketing department”.  People often try to do it all themselves.  And as such they lose out on so many opportunities that could be leveraged from someone else’s knowledge, expertise, or insight due to not being as close to the business as you are.  And building relationships with those around you often translates into new opportunities.  HIPLegal wouldn’t have been promoted on Kathy Ireland’s show had it not been for the relationship with Kathrina.

What did you get from this video?  Any other insights?  If you liked it please share, like and tweet this.

P. S.  About that vested interest I mentioned at the start of this post?  Annie is my sister.  So proud of her.  And if you need intellectual property guidance check out her firm, HIPLegal.

MiMA Explains Its Comprehensive Approach To Modern Marketing on Modern Living with kathy ireland®

Los Angeles, CA – November 2, 2015 – Modern Living with kathy ireland® announces an exclusive interview with the CEO of MiMA LLC, Kathrina Miranda.

Miranda opens her interview by noting, “Most social media sites now provide companies and individuals with a comprehensive set of metrics and free tools concerning who watches online videos. Our goal is to help clients understand these tools and use them more effectively.”

Miranda continues, “We offer each client a full range of media services, including media coaching, brand management, and even brand journalism. Our focus goes beyond B2B or B2C, we focus on what we call H2H, or human-to-human marketing.”

MiMA is a multigenerational firm that is women-owned and controlled, and boasts a racially, ethnically and geographically diverse perspective to marketing. This is a contrast to many current advertising agencies, where women occupy only three percent of the creative director positions.

The firm’s CEO was named on the 100 Most Influential Women in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal in 2014. MiMA has a long-time tradition of contributing to girls’ education through various organizations, and its CEO has served on numerous non-profit boards.

Miranda concludes her comments by noting. “ We handle each of our clients as if they were our only client, and give them personalized and on-point assistance to help meet their marketing goals.”

During the segment, Kathy Ireland interviewed Pam Evans, a relationship strategist who helps people identify their limiting patterns so they can break them and achieve the success they desire.

Pam commented on the challenges of achieving healthy relationships by stating, "I think it's because they rush into them so quickly and often from a state of need. They have this fear of being alone, they are looking for financial stability, and sometimes there is pressure from family and friends to get into a relationship. I also think that people do not do a good job of vetting their partner and go into the relationship with unrealistic expectations."

Pam also commented on how she helps people in these cycles by stating, "I help people in a lot of ways because I have made the mistakes myself. I come from a place of compassion and kindness. I really help people try to discover who they are as individuals first before they go into a relationship."
